Why Training Should Be a Normal Operations Investment

At a recent meeting of manufacturers, several employers commiserated about how difficult it is to institute meaningful training programs because they need every worker on the job. They agreed that they can't “let them take off work to get training” when there are products to be made. The great productivity of the American worker – still the most productive worker in the world outside of Finland (yes, Finland) according to the latest figures from National Council for Advanced Manufacturing (NACFAM) – is partly a result of keeping staffing so low that the absence of just a handful of workers for only a couple of hours can be felt throughout the production process.

Third Client Appreciation Dinner Held

Over 70 individuals from client organizations joined the Center for Business & Industry staff on October 12 for an evening of relaxation and friendship at the third annual Client Appreciation Dinner, held at the Gates Center on the north campus. Dean of Community Education, Dr. Paul Pierpoint, was host for the evening and in his address to the crowd, reported on the past year efforts in providing training and development services for the region. It is estimated that American industries spend fifty billion dollars annually on training and development. It is also estimated that less than one-half of America 's training programs are formally evaluated, and only ten percent of learning is applied to the workplace. So, the question is, if you don't know how effective training is, why do it?
