Practices of Successful Leaders, 1st Person Account by PPL Employee Dustin Wertheimer

(Continued from Front Page)

Over three days, participants are engaged in the teachings of Kouzes/Posner, authors of the best-selling book “Leadership the Challenge.” LDI instructors work the group through endless exercises and dialogue aimed at providing a deeper understanding and application of key practices of high-performing leaders. The October 2005 three-day session was attended by Dustin W. Wertheimer, Controller for PPL Corporation International Operations. His observations on the course are below.

Controller - Global, PPL Corporation

How did you hear about PSL?   Through PPL's internal coaching program.

Why did you attend?   As a younger manager, I am trying to enhance my leadership skills.  I was looking for tangible activities I could engrain in my day-to-day interaction with my team.

What did you learn that you have put into action?   The two main areas I have focused are applying leadership skills consistently and improving communication.  It's one thing to know how a leader should perform; it's another to consistently model an effective leader. I've tried to consistently focus on the practices taught during PSL to try to improve myself as a leader.  I've also worked to improve the communication within my group. Communicate constantly, what you know you said, may not have been heard.  Make sure you are communicating your vision for the group to the group, express confidence in your team and provide positive feedback.

What did you generally feel about the entire three-day program?   I enjoyed the program, I thought the case studies were outstanding; they were unusual but very relevant.  I also thought the instructors' actual business knowledge was outstanding; they brought very valuable examples to the class and worked very well together.

Who would you recommend to attend?    I'd recommend the course to managers that are looking to become better leaders.
