Largest Plastic Chain Conveyor Manufacturer
Automates World
FlexLink, Lehigh Valley Company Since 1988
FlexLink has proven that global marketing can be successful, very successful, in a niche marketplace. “We are a global company, the world's largest manufacturer of flexible plastic chain conveyors,” says Paul S. Jarossy, FlexLink's marketing manager for the Americas. “We manufacture in 25 countries, with 550 employees worldwide, and $125 million in global sales.” FlexLink has been privately held by the Swedish company, EQT Group, since 1997. The company has been manufacturing in the United States since 1988; American offices and plant are located in Iron Run, Allentown. They build assembly systems, pallet systems, mass flow systems, tissue handling systems and others, moving all types of products during the assembly, filling and packaging areas of the manufacturing process.
Ranked in the top 20 automated solution providers, FlexLink is an ISO 2000 certified company that recognizes the market for automation is directly tied to higher productivity and skilled workforces, for them and their customers. “We are a tech-based company, and we need to be ahead of our customers, so higher education is critical to our success,” says Mike Hilsey, FlexLink's vice president, Administration & Logistics. “With change happening so quickly, we also need to train our people on the soft skills such as communication, and develop leadership. Training is vital.”
FlexLink's philosophy is simple: training and education are key to survival. “It's our responsibility to provide an environment, a workplace, where our people can deal with change,” says Mike. “In the three years that we have been working with the Center for Business & Industry, their LDI team has moved our management team through leadership training; they have also been a partner in the execution of a CJT grant promoting our role in Pennsylvania manufacturing.” Concurrently, CBI has been providing training in technical project management, ISO 9000 auditing, computers, and programmable controllers throughout the organization.
FlexLink's customer list is a who's who of first-rate American manufacturers including Nokia, Binney & Smith, Hershey Foods, Day-Timers, Hewlett Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, etc., etc. The company describes itself as a knowledge-based company, “with a sense of urgency and commitment to be the best,” says Paul. “Our growth was strong up until September 2001, but we have returned to profitability in 2003 with the future looking very promising.”
